Electricians, mechanics, and millwrights are some of the positions at the Mt Polley mine that will be receiving layoff notices today and later into this week.
Steve Robertson, Vice President of Corporate Affairs for Imperial Metals, says the layoffs are not only reflective of the jobs available but also the mine’s application for a restart of operations.
Paul French, President of the United Steelworkers Local 1-425Â says he was taken aback from word of the layoffs.
French adds that although the layoffs are concerning, he is hopeful that things could still turn around.
The layoffs which were already being initiated on Friday will affect to 30-40 positions.
