Mayor addresses falling loonie concerns

Quesnel Mayor Bob Simpson says he’s not overly concerned that the sliding Canadian Dollar will have an impact on large projects like the proposed new arena.

Simpson says while the cost of materials could go up he says the Joint Planning Committee, the City, and the Cariboo Regional District, get a little distance from the fluctuation because it will be up to the winning bidder to decide where to get things to meet their price.

He says that contractors may choose to shop in Canada.

Plus Simpson says on balance he feels Quesnel will be beneficiaries of a softening Canadian dollar…

Simpson says the low dollar coupled with the low cost of fuel is actually a perfect combination.

He says another possible result from the softening of the oil sands is that there could potentially be more local labour available for larger projects like the arena.
