Tsilhqot’in National Government appears in Court over Taseko Mines Ltd. Defamation Lawsuit

“Everybody should be entitled to their own opinion.”

That is the main position Chief Joe Alphonse, Tribal Chair of the Tsilhqot’in National Government, presented while testifying at Taseko Mine’s defamation lawsuit against the Wilderness Committee yesterday.

Alphonse also calls the lawsuit disrespectful and a desperate approach for a mining company to take.

He says the Wilderness Committee, like his government, are fully and completely opposed to the New Prosperity Mine project.

“It is simply not acceptable to build a massive open-pit mine in a place of such profound cultural and spiritual importance to their people.”

Closing arguments in the case are not expected to be heard until the end of March.
