Cariboo Job Figures Steady In May

The unemployment rate in the Cariboo region was steady last month.

Andrew Fields, with Stats-Canada, goes over some of the numbers…

“The unemployment rate was 7.5 percent in May. That’s compared with 7.0 percent last May so a slight increase but we can say that that change is not statistically significant. So we can say the unemployment rate hovered around 7, 7 1/2.”

7.5 percent is the lowest the jobless rate in the Cariboo has been since December and is down from 8.9 last month.

Fields says there were actually around 34-hundred more people working in the region compared to a year ago…

‘And if we look by industry we can see that the increases were all in service producing sectors with the largest in healthcare. So there were about two thousand more people working in healthcare compared with last May and the rest of the increases were kind of spread among the other services sectors.”

As for declines, Fields says there were roughly a thousand fewer people working in natural resources.
