Tax increases proposed

Just under $35.00 to the average homeowner and $20.00 dollars per $100,000 of assessment.

That will be the impact on taxpayers in Quesnel as a result of a proposed 5 % increase this year.

Quesnel Mayor Bob Simpson, also the Chair of the new Financial Sustainability Audit Committee, says that money must, however, go towards the city’s $2-million dollar infrastructure shortfall.

He says it will help position Quesnel for any future potential mill closures.

Simpson says the increase to the operating budget will be zero this year.

To that, he says they had to cut approximately $600,000 dollars by reducing Council’s travel budget by 34% as well as some significant savings to Council’s discretionary spending, cuts to staff travel and some operating savings at the airport.

Simpson says this was done without staff cuts or cuts to services with the exception of the spring clean-up.

He says that was the only hit that residents will take.

The next step in the process is the Capital Budget and then the entire budget will go before a public input session before Council then ratifies it.
