Road To NewGold Now A Reality

The Provincial Government has budgeted 7 million dollars for two major road improvements, including a road to NewGold.

Cariboo North MLA Coralee Oakes made the announcement this afternoon at the Kluskus First Nations Band Office on Anderson Drive…

“What we’ll be looking at is there is a bridge over the Blackwater and that is the connector to Kluskus. As well as there will be a road from the Ulkatcho, so Anahim Lake, so there are two parts to the project.”

Construction is anticipated to begin in 2018.

Oakes says the project will connect communities to jobs and opportunities from the resource sector in the Northwest…

“When you look at the project for NewGold going forward, there are 1600 people that will be working out there in a camp so again safety is a top priority and making sure that we have a bridge and a road for the communities out there is critically important as well as a great economic diversification opportunity for First Nations who currently right now are travelling 7 hours to get access to work at the mine and yet they can see it out their backyard. It is 20 kilometers from Kluskus.”

Getting back to the safety component, Oakes says there have been some pretty significant fires out there and this will provide Kluskus and Nazko with a second route out of the community.
