December holds steady for unemployment rate

The jobless rate held steady in the Cariboo last month.

Jason Gilmour, a Labour Market Analyst with Stats Canada, says the unemployment rate was 4.6 percent last month compared to 4.5 a year ago in December of 2013.

Gilmour says the number of people working was also pretty much the same…83,500 compared to 84-thousand.

He says the only change really was in where people were working…

“We’re seeing employment going down in retail, wholesale trade, and accommodation and food services.”

“You’re seeing some increases in areas like information, culture and recreation and educational services.”

Gilmour says it all balances out in terms of the big employment picture.
