The specific question was should they be prohibited in residential areas ?
Council, in a vote of 4 to 2, decided to go with permitting them with requirements in terms of size, aesthetics and safety.
Councillor Scott Elliott and Mayor Bob Simpson were opposed.
Both were concerned with the safety of fire fighters and the potential for hazardous materials to be stored in them.
Mayor Simpson also didn’t buy the argument that the containers were better at deterring theft than a shed for example noting that it was simply a challenge for the next generation of thieves.
Council’s direction will now go to staff to assist them in developing an overall policy for shipping containers.
