Kangaroos Make Survival Pitch To City And CRD

The survival of the Kangaroos senior hockey club was once again on the agenda at last night’s North Cariboo Joint Planning Committee meeting in Quesnel.

Waylon L’Heureux, the Captain of the team, addressed the local politicians and after expressing how important their advertising at the rink was to their future, presented them with a couple of scenarios that could keep them going…

“One option is to do the rink boards and the ice surface. Right now we have multiple advertising packages to our sponsors. We have rink boards for a set amount, we have stair sponsors where they put their logos on the stairs going up the bleachers and we sell some advertising to the ice surface also.”

L’Hereux went on to say that a second option would be hanging banners from the rafters and the ice surface.

He noted that they would be willing to take either should a Junior B hockey team become a reality in Quesnel.

Without wither option, L’Hereux noted that the Kangaroos would not survive.

Compounding matters this year is that the team also has to replace all 72 of their current signs and find storage space to transition into the new arena, adding another 15 thousand dollars to their bill for next season.

Mayor Bob Simpson and CRD Director Jerry Bruce will now form a working group to work with the team and staff prior to the next Joint Planning Meeting in March.

It is expected that a decision will be made at that time.
