Programs receive funds to give voice to Aboriginal women

Community-based organizations across the province, including the Cariboo, will share close to $350,000 to fund programs aimed at stopping violence against Aboriginal women and girls.

Paulette Flamond, a member of the Minister’s Advisory Council for Aboriginal women, says the programs are about giving a voice to Aboriginal women.

“When Aboriginal or all women are silent it basically enables violence or abuse.”

“These programs are supportive and culturally based. They bring together women to understand, to gain knowledge, and to develop some tools to begin healing themselves, their communities, and their families.”

The Cariboo Chilcotin Metis Association will hold a workshop for 10 to 12 women to learn about violence and abuse issues in their community with elders from the Tl’esqox Band at Riske Lake teaching the legend of the “Woman Who Turned to Stone.”
