Debris testing reveals no detection of abestos

Test results have now come back for Maple Drive Junior Secondary in Quesnel.

School District Superintendent Sue-Ellen Miller says debris and dust that has seepedĀ from the cinder-block exterior wall into the gymnasium was tested for asbestos and none was detected.

A hazardous materials contractor was brought in on Wednesday to remove, clean up and seal the site.

Concerns were originally raised by the Quesnel Gymnastics Club.

Miller says that was the only tenant that was affected.

“Cinder blocks are on the exterior walls, not the interior.”

“The tenants that are in the interior of the building, aren’t in contact of their exterior walls so they had no concerns.”

Cinder-blocks containingĀ vermiculite were used in commercial buildings up until the early ’90s.

The facility continues to be safe for use by the community.
