Asbestos discovery affects gymnastics club

Asbestos has forced the Quesnel Gymnastics Club out of their current home at Maple Drive Junior Secondary School.

The club is now looking for a temporary location to continue as many of their almost 300 athletes are in peak training right now.

Tuesday night, they asked the North Cariboo Joint Planning Committee for help.

Spokesperson Nicole Higgins identified the former Gold’s Gym in Johnston Subdivision as a potential new location.

The Joint Planning Committee directed staff to work with the club to find a temporary solution.

The Gymnastics Club has been leasing the spot at Maple Drive from the School District for years now.

The City has more than $200,000 put aside for the club to eventually find a temporary home but it is on the condition that the Cariboo Regional District comes up with a matching amount.

The original motion, made at Joint Planning, was for $500,000 each.
