JPC Ponders Funding Dilemna In Quesnel

The Bouchie Lake Recreation Commission will have to wait to see if it will be reimbursed almost 6 thousand dollars to repair a damaged sewer pipe and drainage issue at the hall.

The North Cariboo Joint Planning Committee kicked the idea around at last (Dec 13) night’s meeting.

Jerry Bruce, the CRD Director for Area B, made the request on behalf of the volunteers.

While there was some support, Quesnel Mayor Bob Simpson made it clear that he feels it could set a “awful precedence…

“One that they go ahead and spend the money and assume we’re going to back fill it and two that we start picking up incremental operating costs without a voted approval of this committee.”

Simpson noted that the group has an operating budget and that sometimes tough decisions have to be made to stay within that budget.

Others, such as City Councillor Ed Coleman, felt that this was due to extraordinary conditions, that it was a one off and was a reasonable request.

No decision was made as they had lost quorum at the meeting.

Staff is expected to come back with a report at the next Joint Planning meeting.
