The steady dropping of temperatures and winter weather being felt throughout the Cariboo has put ice fishing to the forefront of many minds, but when is it safe to do so?
Jude Dion, outdoors-man and local businessman, has the general rule of thumb for ice safety:
“You need 4 inches to walk, 8 inches to run a snowmobile, and 18 inches to drive on, and thats good hard black ice, not that frozen, slushy, punky white stuff. Good hard black ice.”
Dion recommends that ice-anglers auger holes periodically to check ice thickness and use either a buddy system or let someone know where you are going before you head out.
