Quesnel Council Wants To Streamline Economic Developoment

Quesnel City Council would like a single, strategic, and focused economic development plan for the North Cariboo.

Mayor Bob Simpson says it is something they have been working on for a while…

“We’ve been working with the CRD, the Beetle Action Coalition, the Northern Development Initiative Trust, on a separate initiative that actually has significant funding coming to bear and we’re using the community development initiative out of UNBC to help us establish a North Cariboo Economic Development initiative.”

Simpson says Council feels that economic development is still a bit muddy however as the MLA’s office is also working on economic development through the recent “Regional Opportunities” initiative.

He says Council, by unanimous resolution, will be asking MLA Coralee Oakes to merge her initiative into the work that they are doing.

Simpson says Council feels they are better suited than the MLA’s office to steer and manage priorities for the region.

He says Oakes is very busy as a Minister of the Crown and doesn’t have an economic development officer on staff like they do.
