A telephone survey conducted last night confirmed that a majority of residents in the area would like a referendum on electoral reform.
Cathy McLeod, conservative MP for the Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo, called 8800 people and received response from 736 asking 3 specific questions.
“Do people know that the government is talking about changing the system?. The next question I asked is do you agree the voting system should change? And finally, if you’re going to change the system, how you vote, how your vote counts, should it go to a referendum?”
McLeod says 69% of people know the voting system is about to change, 59% do not agree that the system should change and 66% think we should have a referendum on whether or not the system should change.
McLeod’s report to the special committee on electoral reform will reflect these results as well as other information gathered from community forums and direct contact.
