Fire Stats for 2016

If you think this summer has been a tad on the cool, wet side, you’re right.

And while that may have damped holidays, kept the kids out of the water and made golfing even more of a misery, it did have a bright side for the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations and more specifically , the BC Wildfire Service.

While the overall number of fires was down for the year, as we hear from Natasha Broznitsky, the fire information officer for the Cariboo region, it
didn’t start out that way… “this spring got off to an early start for fires in the Cariboo, by the end of April the Cariboo Fire Center had responded to 37 wildfires which was the highest number of wildfire we responded to for the past 10 years for that time of the year.”

To date , there have been just 105 fires and the loss is less than one thousand hectares.
