BC Child Poverty Higher Than National Average
The 2014 BC Child Poverty Report Card was released yesterday showing that little progress has been made to reduce child and family poverty in the province.
Laura van Schaick, Core Officer with the Salvation Army in Quesnel, says the report which discovered one out of every five children in BC live in poverty is alarming.
“The numbers are definitely high and I think that the word startling is right.”
van Schaick says however based on just what they have seen it’s not overly surprising.
“Just this past year we have seen an increase in the number of families with small children that are using our services. We’re continuing to see an increase in the number of children that we are serving.”
24 out of BC’s 29 regional Districts is estimated to have at 1,000 children if not more living poverty.
