UBCM Williams Lake resolution

The Union of B.C. Municipalities convention is still a few weeks away, but the Canadian Taxpayers Federation has come out against almost all of the resolutions being put forward, including one from the city of Williams Lake.

Jordan Bateman, the B.C. director of the CTF says that while the resolution by Williams Lake may seem innocuous because it deals with by-laws as opposed to provincial or federal statutes, it is a slippery slope.

“The problem you have though, is this would change the entire law and you would have this spread across the province and, you know, you would eventually have other councils abuse it”

Bateman says once the governance moves away from a set cap on what a fine can be, municipalities wanting to get rid of certain types of business could apply the changes unfairly and thereby force that business out of the market place.
