NDP Says Liberals Falling Short In Wake Of Mount Polley Breach

The NDP is accusing the Christy Clark Liberals of abandoning local communities affected by the Mount Polley disaster of 2014.

Doug Donaldson, the New Democrat Energy and Mines spokesperson, says the Liberals have failed to address the impacts on the local economy and failed to hold the company accountable for polluting Quesnel Lake.

He says they are hearing that people are still frustrated with the response of the BC Liberal Government…on the clean-up side, on the side of helping small businesses respond and come back from this huge hit and on the First Nations front.

Donaldson says First Nations are going to be a key to any mining project and he says they too are quite unhappy with the responses of the government and the company.

He says the Clark Government has also ignored a key recommendation from the Auditor General calling for compliance and enforcement to be conducted by an independent body that is not part of the Ministry of Energy and Mines.

All of this comes on the two-year anniversary of the breach that saw 25 million cubic meters of tailings spilled into Quesnel Lake.
