New Seniors Housing Proposal For Downtown Quesnel

The Quesnel Lions Club Housing Society now has a plan B for it’s proposed seniors housing complex in downtown Quesnel.

The original plan called for 11 parking spaces for the 30 units which raised some concerns on City Council during the rezoning process.

Mitch Vik, the President of the Society, hopes they’ve found a solution after purchasing the piece of property adjacent to their existing property at the corner of Reid Street and McNaughton Avenue.

He says “what we’re proposing at the outset, and I want to thank everyone in the neighbourhood and all interested parties for providing their feedback and we did listen, we’re going to increase the parking right off the bat to 17 stalls, including one handicapped space.”

Vik says they can even go one step farther if need be.

He says “also we’re going to have a contingency so there is going to be enough spare space. Should parking still be an issue, we will have the flexibility to have more parking or convert it from greenspace to parking.”

Vik says their preference would still be to have a greenspace there with a fountain and possibly some other amenities.

The cost of the project is now around 5.4 million, up from 5 million, due to not only purchasing the land but also inflation.

Vik says they will now go through another public consultation process with the new project.

If everything goes well with that and rezoning and getting the funding from BC Housing, he says they could break ground by next summer.
