Political history was made in the United States yesterday and it didn’t go unnoticed here in the Cariboo.
Hillary Clinton, of course, became the first woman nominated to run for President for a major party.
Mary Sjostrom, the first and only woman to be Mayor of Quesnel, says she applauds her as it is not an easy path.
“As a woman certainly she has worked many, many years to get to where she’s at today. I am not saying that her competition isn’t going to give her a run for her money, but i really congratulate her on behalf of being a woman in the political arena, it is really not as easy as people might think.”
Sjostrom, who was Mayor for 6 years, says she’s not sure why but it does seem that women have to work much harder to achieve recognition doing the same job as a man.
That said, Sjostrom also says that we’ve come a long way in the past 50 years.
