Quesnel’s Board of Education has unanimously rescinded school closure bylaw number 7 which officially means that Parkland and Kersley elementary schools will be open in the fall.
The move follows an announcement from Cariboo North MLA Coralee Oakes that the province will fully fund the schools for more than $530,000.
Several Trustees, including Board Chair Tony Goulet, said they were obviously happy that they didn’t have to close two schools but they were also frustrated with the process.
Goulet says they need to go beyond these short term funding announcements…
“We need to start now working on sustainable funding and work with the Ministry and the MLA to advocate for stable, predictable funding for the years to come or as you heard the comments, we could be right back here in a different time frame, a different Board; who knows.”
The decision was made during a special board meeting late Thursday afternoon.
The room was packed with members of both communities and PAC groups who were obviously pleased with the decision.
