Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day

Awareness of the fourth leading cause of cancer death in Canada is being brought as today marks the first World Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day

Only 2% of all cancer research is devoted to pancreatic cancer, although the survival rate is in the single digits.

Dr. Daniel Renouf, with the BC Cancer Agency, says given the lack of advancement in treatment, pancreatic cancer will soon be an even more common cause of cancer-related deaths.

“The kind of projected estimates is as the treatment for some other kinds of cancers have improved, over time it will become an even more common form of cancer-related death until we have better treatments to treat it. Often times we don’t detect it until quite a late stage.

52 cases of pancreatic cancer have been reported in the Cariboo-Chilcotin.
