Fire At Quesnel Mill

Dark smoke filled the air in many parts of Quesnel this morning.

The Quesnel Volunteer Fire Department was called out to an oil fire at West Fraser Mill at around 10 am.

Fire Chief Sylvain Gauthier says workers tried to put the fire out but eventually called them and they were able to put it out fairly quickly and also keep it from spreading.

“The fire was contained to the unit of origin and never touched the building even though the building was about 12-13 feet away. The damage is mainly to the five electrical units and the motor that all were within the vicinity of the system.”

Gauthier says the mill continued to run as they battled the fire.

He says no one was hurt and the cause, although likely mechanical, remains under investigation.
