Grass Fires Keep Quesnel Fire Department Busy

The Quesnel Volunteer Fire Department was kept busy on Tuesday (May 24) afternoon with two grass fires.

Fire Chief Sylvain Gauthier says the first one this morning was at the skateboard park right beside the West Park Mall and the second one was in the alley behind Boyd Street and he says in that case a structure was threatened.

Gauthier says fortunately they were able to quickly put the fires out and no one was hurt.

He says in both cases the fires were started by carelessness.

Gauthier says RCMP apprehended a girl in the first fire after she discarded her cigarette.

He says the second fire was intentionally set by someone lighting the grass on fire or throwing their cigarette or match on the ground and then walking away.

Gauthier says it is very dry outside and the cotton from the trees is acting as fuel for fires.

He urges everyone to be extremely careful when discarding cigarettes or matches or even lighting backyard fires.
