As a referendum regarding proposed pool renovations continues to make waves before the Nov. 15 civic election, the Cariboo Regional District is reminding the public that there is a second referendum.
Darron Campbell, Manager of Community of Services, shares why voters in the electoral areas of A, B, C, and I will be asked on a referendum regarding HandyDART services.
“The costs are in excess of $15,000 at this time. That is the maximum contribution that the CRD is able to make to the City of Quesnel and BC Transit that operate the service. By increasing the amount we’re able to contribute, it would maintain those service levels at their current rate which is almost 1500 service hours available for rural residents.”
If the referendum is approved the CRD will increase the maximum allowable taxation from $15,000 up to $70,000, with residents facing a $7 per $100,000 tax increase.
Campbell reminds individuals of the importance of having their say on the referendum which can only be done through casting a vote in the civic election.
“It’s extremely important that people inform themselves about the referendum and then get out and vote for the service…The goal of the CRD is to make sure residents are aware of changes that are proposed to be made and then have their voices heard on Voting Day for these proposals that are brought forward.”
If the referendum on HandyDART Transit Services is not approved by voters the hours of services will be reduced accordingly within the CRD’s budget of $15,000.
BC transit estimates 3,700 riders use HandyDART Transit services each year.
