Province Unveils Quilt Honouring MMIW

The Province unveiled a memorial quilt in the BC Parliament building Tuesday, honouring all those lost on the Highway of Tears.

It has 90 patches, each a decorated piece of a victim’s clothing or possession.Quilt Ceremony 2

Aboriginal Relations Minister John Rustad says it brings together many of those who have dealt with tragic loss.

“To remember those loved ones, to be able to share in the experience and to be able to make sure that other people. When they see it, (they) have an opportunity to also experience what has gone on; so much wrong to so many good people,” he says.

Moving forward, he hopes it encourages people to talk about their stories and help end the abuse.

“We need people to share their experience in the communities. We need those voices to be able to be heard for us to truly be able to have a path of healing, but also to break that cycle of violence for the future generations.”

The quilt was a key outcome of February’s BC Family Gathering in Prince George.

It will be hanging in the BC Parliament building until Fall.
