Crews Battle Blazes in Peace Region

Crews from the Cariboo Fire Centre as well as members from the Williams Lake Fire Department’s Structural Protection Unit continue to battle blazes near Fort St. John which have forced evacuations.

Fire Information Officer Emily Epp says as of Friday there were over 400 BC Wildfire Service Crews and 140 contract crew firefighters working in the Peace Region.

“There are currently 7 wildfires of note in the Peace region. The two largest are the Siphon Creek fire which is estimated to be 17,000 hectares in size and the Beatton Airport Rd. fire which is about 12,000 hectares in size.”

Epp says about 77 firefighters, with the support of 9 helicopters and heavy equipment were working on the Siphon Creek fire Friday afternoon which crossed into the Alberta border Thursday.

“B.C is working to fight the wildfire on both sides of the border and we’re doing everything that we can with our resources to relieve the pressure on Alberta.”
