River Rush Forward snipes KIJHL’s Rookie of the Week spot

With five goals, a shootout winner, and two assists in the last three games, the Quesnel River Rush’s Gavyn Schaufele is the KIJHL’s Rookie of the Week.

Schaufele, from Medicine Hat, Alberta, and a former Seattle Thunderbirds draft pick in 2023, has looked as though he’s at a shooting range in his first year of the KIJHL.

He scored a hat trick and the shootout game winner in the River Rush’s win against the 100 Mile House Wranglers on November 14.

In the Rush’s loss to the Creston Valley Thundercats on November 15, Schaufele scored twice and had an assist.

He got his second assist of the week during the Rush’s school day game against the Williams Lake Mustangs on November 18.

“It was good that I was able to find the back of the net a few times there last weekend,” says Schaufele in the KIJHL’s Rookie of the Week release. “The big factors that really helped were being able to play with Gage Parrell and Isaiah Bagri. We work well together. We all create space for each other and make plays off one another. It’s been good.”

Going into this week’s game against Kelowna, Schaufele has 11 goals, nine assists, and 20 points in 17 games this season. Fourth on the River Rush for points, and second in scoring. He’s sixth overall among rookies in the KIJHL.
