Kersley Fire Fighters battle attic fire

The Kersley Volunteer Fire Department was called out to Parr Road at around 5-20 p.m. on Sunday evening.
Fire Chief Dennis Syvertsen says there was about 15 feet of flame coming out of the roof when they arrived.
He says the fire was mostly contained to the attic, although there was a lot of smoke and water damage done to the rest of the house.
   Syvertsen says Quesnel helped out.
“I called in for mutual aid for water and manpower from Quesnel.  They came out and helped us out because all the rural departments, we’re all exterior only.  And with a group effort they knocked down the stuff on the inside and we were able to put out the rest of the roof and the attic from the outside last night.’
He says these types of fires are never easy and it takes a while to get them out.
“I think last night was about six hours.  Attic fires are just ugly to fight because you can’t go on the roof, you can’t go inside to get to it, so you’re going through the soffits, and then you’re cutting holes in part of the roof or you reach from a ladder because you can’t really walk on it because structurally it’s not sound, so it’s takes quite a bit of time.”
Syvertsen says they were called back to deal with a hot spot this morning.
He says no one was hurt.
“Another individual drove past and saw the roof was on fire, said hey your house is on fire, you have to get out.  So the two occupants were out of the house when we got there.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
