Volunteers needed to put on a Grade-A Williams Lake Dry Grad event

The Williams Lake Dry Grad Committee is in need of volunteers.

This annual tradition started in 1989 as a way for the community to put on an event for the students to acknowledge all of their accomplishments over the years and to also be a safe venue for them to celebrate that evening.

“This is not a school associated event it’s a community event,” Co-Chair and Chair of Fundraising, Amanda Bailey said, “Any youth graduating in 2026 are welcome to come. They can be home schooled, they can be at the private school, they can be at any school in the area. That also includes the schools out West as well.”

Dora-Lee Wheeldon, Dry Grad Committee Chair said behind the scenes there are a lot of volunteers working hard to put this on.

“They’re decorating, fundraising, we’re looking for donations, we have Food and Activity Committees.”

We asked how much of a time commitment it is to be a Dry Grad volunteer.

“It depends if they hold a position as Chair or a general volunteer,” Bailey said, “people can come and help one day. If maybe they can build a scenery or maybe they have a special talent they could offer us for decorating or something like that. They could come once and donate their time, give us some ideas, or they can come to every meeting and volunteer every week if they want.”

Wheeldon said they want the grade 10 and 11 parents involved with this as well because we’re working up to their graduation.

“If we have more of the grade 10 and 11 parents involved it frees up the time for the day of graduation for those grade 12 parents who are on the committee to actually to enjoy that day with their son or daughter. And as those potential graduates move the same thing will happen to them for next year.”

Wheeldon noted that would like to see more the students involved in the fundraisers to know that there is a lot of work put into this event for them and we ant them to be visible to the community.

The next dry Grad meeting will be Monday November third at 6:30 in the Commons at Williams Lake Secondary School.

“That’s open to all members, you don’t have to be a parent and anybody who is wanting to volunteer the night of Dry Grad, the only requirement we have is a criminal record check,” Wheeldon noted.
