“We’d love to see a sea of orange shirts in Boitanio Park in Williams Lake”

Students throughout the Cariboo-Chilcotin School District have been invited to attend a very special event tomorrow (September 26) in Boitanio Park in Williams Lake.

It’s in recognition of Orange Shirt Day and the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.

Event Coordinator for the Orange Shirt Society Venta Rutkauskas said they always focus on the youth because they are our change makers.

“They are ready to hear some of the hard facts and willing to lead with their hearts. It’s our great honor and privilege to continue to work with students and Administration of the District to bring as many students together each year to honor, remember, and commemorate students of the Indian Residential School system and those who never made it home.”

Rutkauskas said they will have an amazing set of speakers to welcome them including the Williams Lake First Nation Culture Team, Shelia Dyck from Canim Lake First Nation, Rebecca Solomon from the Tsilhqot’in First Nation, and Esketemc Chief Fred Robbins.

“We choose speakers who have experience and have been working in education throughout their time.” Rutkauskas noted, “We want to engage the students not scare them but it’s important to share the truth in an appropriate way.”

She said all schools really want to attend which is why they are back in Boitanio Park this year to allow for a greater number.

“Last year’s location was had a limited audience seating so we’re back to opening the doors to more participation.”

The event runs tomorrow (Friday) from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm.

“We’d love to see a sea of orange in the park,” Rutkauskas added.
