Counterfeit $100 bills found circulating in 100 Mile House

Counterfeit 100-dollar bills have been found circulating in businesses in 100 Mile House.

The RCMP say that finding counterfeit currency in the community is a common occurrence; however, they have seized several counterfeit bills in the last three days, which is a cause for concern.

“One seized bill was similar in colour to a 50-dollar bill,” says Sergeant Brian Lamb.

“Others are much more convincing and appear legitimate. Further investigation was needed for these bills, where subtle inconsistencies were observed.

According to Lamb, six counterfeit bills have been seized during the police’s investigation. Three of which had the exact same serial number, which Lamb says is a big “giveaway” that the bills were counterfeit.

“Each bill should have its own serial number. Other things that give them away are the touch and feel of the paper and plastic. The colouring, and if the Bank of Canada stamp is off, that is something hard to get correct when counterfeiting bills.”

Police are asking local merchants and anyone conducting financial transactions with 100-dollar bills to be vigilant and contact their financial institutions to inspect the bills if any high-value bills look suspicious.

More information about counterfeit currency can be found at the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s website.

100 Mile RCMP asks anyone in the community who may have information regarding the incidents and the use of counterfeit bills to call the 100 Mile House detachment.
