Open Burning Ban Lifted Throughout Cariboo Fire Centre

With recent cooler rainy weather, an open burning ban has been lifted throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre.

Fire Information Officer, Emily Koch , says although the burning of woody debris piles, stubble or grass, and use fireworks, sky lanterns, or burning barrels is now permitted, members of the public need to be mindful that this does not apply within the boundaries of a local government that has forest fire prevention bylaws and is serviced by a fire department.

Koch adds it is also important for members of the public to be mindful that fire prevention starts through them.

Anyone burning material in piles larger than 2 meters high and 3 meters wide, or burns stubble or grass over an area larger than 0.2 hectares, must first obtain a burn registration number by calling 1-888-797-1717.

82 of the 157 wildfires that occurred in the Cariboo Fire Centre this season were human-caused.
