VICTORIA — The B.C. Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction says it is taking steps to ensure provincial disability and income assistance cheques are not delayed if Canada Post workers strike later this week.

About 55,000 postal workers could walk off the job early Friday morning after the Canadian Union of Postal Workers issued a 72-hour strike notice.

The ministry says all cheques that were scheduled to be mailed for May will instead be sent directly to ministry offices for distribution. It says those who are unable to pick up their cheque can contact the ministry to make alternative arrangements.

About 88 per cent of recipients are expected to receive their payments by direct deposit, which will not be affected by any potential strike.

Mailed cheques for the province’s Seniors Supplement will be delivered by Canada Post volunteers through the Socio-Economic Cheque Delivery program, the ministry says.

It adds that lessons were learned from the Canada Post strike in November and December of last year, when the ministry says it successfully distributed 98 per cent of monthly payments.

CUPW says it issued the strike notice after Canada Post indicated it may unilaterally change working conditions and suspend employee benefits. The union’s collective agreements are set to expire Thursday.

In a statement on its website, Canada Post says it remains committed to reaching collective agreements that protect and enhance wages and benefits while reflecting the corporation’s current realities.

It notes it has recorded more than $3 billion in pre-tax losses since 2018, and expects to post another significant loss for 2024.

Duane Schultz
Not much is known about this man of mystery. Some believe he is either running from his past, or was placed in the Cariboo many years ago by the "Witless Relocation Program".

Wake Up with Duane Monday-Friday with News updates starting at 6am.

The GOAT Mornings With Dale Taylor

According to my kids when they were younger they said my job was “…wearing earmuffs and singing songs” and it’s probably the best and most accurate description of what I do on The Goat’s Morning Show in the Cariboo!

The first radio job I had was in Fernie, BC, with the mighty EK Radio in late 1979. I was so nervous and couldn’t breath when on-air but it was so exciting! A more seasoned guy returned to the Kootenays and I was out, so, then I went to BCIT for radio programming. Great course!

Came up to the Cariboo in the summer of ’83 and thought I’d gone to the North Pole. I’d never been this far north in the province before.

It was the days of Cariboo Radio and I had finally learned how to breathe and be on-air at the same time!

Jump ahead a century and here I am on the morning show on The Goat wearing earmuffs and singing songs. Thankfully I’m all by myself in the studio doing just that and not torturing anyone nearby. So far.
Kyle Bottom
Who in the world is Kyle Bottom? Well, I’m just your average middle-aged guy with the gift of gab. I’ve managed to talk my way through life up to this point, as a bartender, a museum guide, a stand-up comedian, and now... as a radio DJ.

I knew I was destined to work in radio, so I went to BCIT in 2018, and completed the Radio Arts program.

I was all set to begin my career in 2020 when a certain pandemic derailed my dreams.

Fast forward three years and I’m finally doing what I love, filling your ear holes with a sultry baritone on a daily basis.
Shawn Greenlaw
I think a lot of people like to put themselves in a box. Whether it’s ‘sports fan’ or ‘foodie’ or ‘ford owner’ (we call this one ‘simpleton’ in the Greenlaw house). But honestly? I’ve never really wanted that for myself. I’m just... Shawn! And that’s what you’ll get with my show!

I’m the middle child in a family of six, which I think is where I learned to project my voice. I was both the annoying little brother AND the annoyed older brother all in one life! What a deal, eh!? I’m a nerd who loves D&D, video games, movies, and every now and again I try my hand at cooking something edible.

Whether we’re chatting on your lunch break, chilling at home after a long day, or hitting the road together, every minute of it is the 100% authentic Shawn Greenlaw. And that means I’ll be hitting you with offside takes, off the wall energy, challenges to your perspective, but most importantly, a good time. All from the heart! I wish there was a better way for me to describe my show to you, but its really one of those things you have to hear for yourself!

On my show, everyone is welcome. I'm a proud ally, and I’m passionate about inclusive initiatives that unite us. You’ll catch me talking about those from time to time on the air as well. There is no room for bigotry here!

I’ve been in the Cariboo since February 2023, and getting to know beautiful B.C coming from eastern Alberta has been an experience and a half, and I’m looking forward to building even more memories as the years flash by! Rock on!

The BX Morning Show

I first got into radio when I was a kid when a friend and I made our own radio shows on cassete tapes. Growing up in 100 Mile House, I did a workstudy at this very station.

Thanks to some good advice from my radio mentor Larry Rode, I got a certificate in broadcast arts in 1991. After failing to break into radio after school, I did other jobs but kept my hand in, working as morning host and program director at my universitys station, WUFK in Fort Kent, Maine.

Coming back to 100 Mile, when the afternoon and news job opened up, I took the dive back into radio! When Larry retired after nearly 35 years in 100 Mile, I took over the morning show. I’m happy to be at CKBX, where I always wanted to work, and waking up my hometown!

Tune-in with Chris weekday mornings from 6am to 10am
