An Incident That Occurred In Quesnel January 2024 Being Investigated

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is investigating an incident in Quesnel where one person sustained a serious injury while being taken into custody by members of the RCMP back on January 6,2024.

In a release the IIO stated that officers responded to call about a person experiencing a mental health emergency.

Police eventually located the person on Avison Avenue and detained the individual under the Mental Health Act.

They were then taken to a hospital for assessment where it was determined they suffered an injury during the interaction with police.

The IIO was notified in February 2025 after the woman filed a complaint with the RCMP.

After reviewing medical records, the IIO stated it has been determined the injury meets the threshold of serious harm as defined in the Police Act.

Investigative steps will seek to confirm the details leading up to and including the interaction with police, as well as whether any force used was necessary, proportionate, and justified under the circumstances.
