Taxpayers in Quesnel can expect a 7.5 percent rate increase this year.
Director of Finance Kari Bolton says that amounts to about $88.97 to the average homeowner, or $24.92 per 100 thousand dollars worth of assessment.
Commercial ratepayers will be paying $127.20 per $100,000 and Industrial ratepayers will see an increase of $662.21 per $100,000.
The tax increase was going to be higher than 7.5 percent.
It was going to be 8.6 percent, but Council asked staff to take another run at it last month.
Bolton says they made adjustments to the line painting budget, to the community consultation budget, and cut a proposed increase to purchasing vehicles.
She also confirms that they used a transit surplus from this past year.
Councillor Mitch Vik, the Chair of the Financial Sustainability and Audit Committee, says they felt that was a lot for people to pay and they were looking for a more manageable figure.
On the tariffs, Vik says they took the approach of what they don’t know, they don’t know, so they will hold the line and not panic.
The budget was passed at last (Tuesday) night’s Council meeting.
The Tax Rates bylaw has to be passed by May 15th.
