It’s Pink Shirt Day!
An annual event against bullying held in Canada and New Zealand to raise awareness by participants wearing pink.
It was organized back in 2007 by two grade 12 students in Nova Scotia who bought and distributed 50 pink shirts after a ninth grader was bullied for wearing a pink polo shirt during the first day of high school.
Closer to home, a Williams Lake businesses has been supporting this day over the past 5-years by creating unique Pink Shirt Day merchandise to raise awareness and funds for youth organizations.
Do-More Promotional Owner, Nancy Dron explains how this event got it’s start at her store.
“We always wanted to do something for anti-bullying day but we really wanted to keep our money raised local so we put our heads together to figure out instead of donating to a larger organization how to keep the money within Williams Lake. And we try to pick organizations that are specifically targeting the youth and anti-bullying.”
Last year Do-More Promotional gave Williams Lake Big Brothers and Big Sisters $700 from the merchandise sales and this year it will be going to the Boys and Girls Club of Williams Lake.
