Quesnel Council To Find Middle Ground On Shipping Containers

Members of Quesnel City Council acknowledged last night that they heard the delegation at a public hearing on shipping containers loud and clear.

Council was proposing a complete ban on shipping containers in residential areas but do to opposition they will now go another route.

The focus will now be on regulating them in terms of placement, form and character as well as safety as it pertains to the storage of hazardous materials and venting.

Mayor Bob Simpson responded to the notion that Quesnel wasn’t Vancouver but an industrial town so why would you regulate it in the first place.

He says pretty much every community has regulations and that Quesnel is actually very late to the game.

Simpson says the process actually started 10 years ago and that Prince George has had regulation since 2007, 100 Mile since 2012 and Williams Lake since 2015.

Simpson also noted that they felt they had to act because they received a report from Fire Chiefs about an old container that was not vented that blew up and killed a volunteer fire fighter.
