Construction will begin in September on what’s called a second stage housing project in Quesnel.
Emily Neilsen, the Administrative Coordinator at the Quesnel Women’s Resource Centre, went over the project at this week’s City Council meeting.
“It will have 27 units. It’s two floors. It will be located on the west side right next to the Echen Hall and the Two Rivers Church, up on that little grassy knoll there, on the hillside.”
Neilsen says the land was graciously donated by the City, and they are working with BC Housing.
She says women and children fleeing violence currently go to the Amata Transition House, but they can only stay there for so long.
“Someone who is staying in transitional housing would then be on a list and accepted into second stage housing, and then they would live there for I believe up to 3 years, and then it would help them transition into the next phase of housing which would be some kind of affordable housing for them and their children.”
Neilsen says the idea is to find them a secure, safe, affordable place to live.
