Water Treatment Plant Gets Green Light In South Cariboo

108 Mile residents are overwhelmingly in favor of borrowing money up to 2 million dollars to invest in their water system.

There were 415 yes votes and just 100 no’s in a referendum on the issue.

The results won’t be official until tomorrow afternoon but CRD Chair Al Richmond, also the Director for Area G, says the people have spoken.

He says it’s great that it was approved by more than 80 percent because he says the worst situation you can have is 51 percent either way as it doesn’t really give you a clear indication of what people want.

Richmond says the funding represents one-third of the total cost of the project with the Federal and Provincial Governments chipping in their share as well.

He says the money will be used to build a new treatment plant this year to treat manganese in the 108 water system.

Richmond says they also have future plans to look at developing an additional water source at the north end of the ranch to minimize the impact on the current wells that seem to be having an effect on lake levels.

He says they are still looking for funding opportunities to cover the cost of that.
