CIHL Rivals To Join Forces In Williams Lake In The Fight Against Cancer

A special night is planned for the last home game of the regular season for the Williams Lake Stampeders.

This Friday’s (January 31) tilt with their Northern Rivals, the Quesnel Kangaroos, will also be Hockey Fights Cancer Night.

Head Coach Derrick Walters said there are other teams within the Central Interior Hockey League that kind of do this regularly raising a lot of money for this cause.

“We just wanted to do our part as well and I thinks it’s something really good for the community, it brings people together and show’s that nobody is fighting that disease alone. So we came together as an Executive group with the Stampeders to put this evening together.”

Walters said proceeds from the “Chuck a puck” puck toss, and partial proceeds from each ticket, will go to the BC Cancer Foundation.

We asked if Hockey Fights Cancer Night is something the Stampeders will continue to do.

“This is kind of a trial run then moving on having a better plan and maybe do a couple of more games, maybe a month’s worth of games for it.” Walters said, “This is just the beginning stages for us and we’re looking forward to it.”

Walters noted that in future seasons wearing Pink Jersey’s is also on the table, something they are looking at, and then maybe doing an auction after for some of them.

On the Williams Lake Stampeders FaceBook page they posted that they wanted to fill the rink with pink and encourage the fans to wear theirs to support the cause.
