Unemployment rate in the Cariboo region was up to close out 2024

There was an increase in the Cariboo region’s jobless rate in December.

Vincent Ferrao, a Labour Market Analyst with Stats Canada, says “the unemployment rate was 6.2 percent, compared to 5.6 percent in December of 2023.”

Ferrao says there were fewer people working and more people looking for work.

“We have 84,400 people working. There were a bit more in December 2023 when we had 86,800 people working. We have 5,600 people looking for work, and in December 23 we had 5,200 people looking for work.”

Looking at the different sectors, Ferrao says there were changes in both directions.

“We saw increases in finance, insurance and real estate and leasing, and also in accommodation and food services, and there were fewer people working in construction and manufacturing.”

The national jobless rate was 6.7 percent last month, down slightly from 6.8 percent in November.

BC’s unemployment rate was an even 6 percent in December.
