Tax Shifting Hot Topic For Quesnel Mayoral Candidates

Tax shifting was a hot topic at an all-candidates forum in Quesnel on Tuesday night.

Former MLA Bob Simpson, one of two candidates for Mayor, noted that a Council decision wasn’t needed on tax shifting, a community decision was needed…

Simpson went on to say that Quesnel has already lost 880 thousand dollars a year between Canfor and Northstar shutting down.

Incumbent Mayor Mary Sjostrom noted that Council has discussed tax shifting annually but has only shifted once.

She added however that it takes 4 votes on Council to do it and that it can have quite an impact on taxpayers…

There were numerous other issues raised at the Forum including West Quesnel Land Stability, the new arena, an infrastructure deficit, and homelessness to name just a few.

Close to 200 people packed the Royal Canadian Legion to take in the event.
