Quesnel City Council endorses 15 million dollar capital budget

Quesnel City Council has unanimously approved its 2015 capital budget.

Director of Finance Kari Bolton went over the numbers at Tuesday (Dec 17) night’s meeting.

“The capital budget for 2025 is $15,000,000 with the largest project being the Johnston Bridge. So we’re still finalizing the details for that project and are hoping it will proceed in 2025. We’re still waiting for some more pricing to come back, so that pricing might change.”

The 15 million dollar capital budget is up from 9.8 million in 2024.

8.8 million is being budgeted for the Johnston Bridge right now.

400 thousand dollars has been earmarked to redesign the men’s baseball diamond at West Fraser Timber Park.

Director of Community Services Jeff Norburn talked about those details.

“Basically that’s to take the men’s baseball diamond that we have in West Fraser Timber Park and resize it, so we’ll make it smaller so it’s a more appropriate size for minor ball for their bantam boys. They don’t like the size of the field now, they also feel that it will accommodate their pee wee age group that is being displaced by the sale of the Cariboo Field so that is one of the primary triggers. The other is that the backstop for the men’s baseball diamond needs to be replaced anyway.”

Norburn says that project will be paid for with gas tax funds.

Other major projects include 740 thousand dollars for a new road and storm drain on Walkem Road, and 475 thousand dollars in paving for a number of roads.

A large portion of the capital budget will be paid for using grant funding and capital reserves.

Changes can still be made to the budget before the bylaw is passed in April or May.
