Consumer Price Index Rises Again

Eating healthy in the Cariboo and across B.C. became more expensive last month due to the latest inflation numbers.

Prices in the province rose 2.3% from last month.

Stats Canada Economic Analyst, Kyle de Marche says the price of fresh vegetables ballooned almost 30% over the past 12 months.

“Fresh vegetables that aggregate prices were up 26.2% in January on a year over year basis that’s compared to 18.2% at the Canada level. Prices in the province have risen more than anywhere else in the country.”

Things like tomatoes, cucumbers, cauliflower, and lettuce rose in price by 12 cents or more across Canada in 2015.

However, BC did outgain Canada in one category.

“Clothing and footwear are down at the Canada level by 0.3% since last year but in BC,” de Marche says.

“It is actually up 1.8% and the main driver is footwear which is up 7% in the province over the past 12 months.”

Inflation in Canada rose by 2.0% in January after going up 1.6% in December.
