Giving Mother Nature A Helping Hand In Williams Lake

The City of Williams Lake gave their Snow Machine a test drive yesterday in the Boitanio Rail Park in preparation for the upcoming season.

Director of Community Services, Stacey Miranda, said it was purchased with COVID Funding a couple of years ago.

“There was a whole package of things that we (the City) bought for winter recreation, some snowshoes, a little snow groomer so we could groom some trails in Boitanio Park. We are hoping that we can get that out there working so that we have plenty of opportunities for people to come and recreate in the Park.”

Miranda said most of the people that use these rails are snowboarders.

“They can ride the rails all the way down and then hoof it back up to the top and ride again. It’s free activity for those people who are beginner snowboarders wanting to experience some tips and tricks before going to a big hill.”

Most of the time Miranda said that they are trying to encourage people to be outside and being active and we try to create activities that are new and different so everyone has different options available to them.

“We are hoping over the next few days that we get a good base going which is mostly ice right now. Once we get that base going we can continue to make snow and if Mother Nature co-operates we’ll have a great opportunity to use the rails and hopefully with the snow making machine we can add up to six weeks more usable time on the rails. Our big event that we use the snow rails for is usually Family Day weekend in February so if everything goes well we will be able to do that again.”

She added the last couple of years the City had to cancel that because there wasn’t enough snow.
