100 Mile among top reducers during Earth Hour

The results are in from Earth Hour 2014 which took place over the weekend.

Of all BC towns that data was available from, 100 Mile House ranks 6th in terms of highest cutback of electricity use at 3.3%. 100 Mile actually tied Oak Bay at that mark.

BC Hydro Community Relations Coordinator Dave Mosure talks about the small town success:

70 communities were listed, with Whistler taking the #1 spot at 6.0% reduction.

The average reduction for the province on Saturday night was 1.0%, the lowest since Earth Hour began in Canada in 2008. That number is equal to 65 megawatt hours, compared to 136 megawatt hours, a 7 year high, just a year ago.

Williams Lake and Quesnel were not listed by BC Hydro as participants.

  • 2011: 117 megawatt hours or 1.8 per cent reduction in overall provincial load
  • 2010: 64.6 megawatt hours or 1.04 per cent reduction in overall provincial load
  • 2009: 72.67 megawatt hours or 1.1 per cent reduction in overall provincial load
  • 2008: 125 megawatt hours or 2 per cent reduction
