Cariboo RCMP Detachments remind you tis the Season not to give thieves any opportunities to ruin your Holidays.
100 Mile House Sargeant Brian Lamb said when you are out shopping keep your gifts in the trunk or covered as thieves will look for an easy opportunity to break into your car or truck.
“If they see something in a vehicle, even a locked door at times will not prevent them from easily smashing a window to take what they want. Most importantly don’t leave these types of items in your vehicle overnight.”
Lamb said if you’re doing some large scale shopping and your vehicle is full and you still have a few more stops throughout the day, he suggests taking those items home then go out again.
During the Holidays many people travel throughout the province to spend some time with family and friends.
Lamb had these tips for how to protect your home when you’re not there.
“Security Systems definitely help, there are some very good affordable ones out there. In lieu of that, advising your neighbours that you’re going to be out of town. Having either a neighbour or friends of family come check on your residence and keeping your lights on. Keeping your driveway maintained. If it snows and it looks like there’s been no one into your property, that gives thieves a hint that the residence is vacated.”
It’s also the Season of for fake charities asking for donations.
“There are things you check online with the Anti Fraud Centre for a list of known scams,” Lamb said, “More importantly do your own research, goggle the business name and more often than not you will find out if they are a scam or not. And be suspicious of people going door to door looking for donations as we’ve (100 Mile RCMP) have had issues with those in the past as well, and if you feel that it is suspicious give police a call.”
Lamb also reminds the public to be careful when out driving during the Holiday Season.
